Humans are designed to move. Daily walking is one of the best exercises for our health and wellbeing. Unfortunately, our modern lifestyle has left us immobile for most of the day. We spend hours on end sitting on an 'ergonomic' chair, in front of a computer screen, inside air-conditioned buildings to our detriment.
We are mobile social creatures by design. Walking has a vast array of benefits, as listed below.
Mental health benefits
- Improves your mood
- Reduces stress
- Manages anxiety
- It helps you sleep better
- Increases your energy
- It helps you to cope with difficult times
- Improves your confidence and self-esteem
- Reduces the risk of depression
Physical health benefits
As well as helping to look after your mental health, walking also helps to look after your physical health, by allowing you to:
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Keep your muscles and bones healthy
- Increase your cardiovascular fitness
It can also reduce your risk of developing certain health conditions, including:
- Cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure and stroke
- Type 2 diabetes
- Some cancers
Walk in nature and breath in the fresh air. During the summer months, walk barefoot on grass. This has fantastic health benefits, such as reducing inflammation and neutralising free radicals from your body. This is known as earthing and has many proven health benefits.
Walking needs to be incorporated daily into your life. Even if you can only get out for ten minutes, do it!
